The Heart of Helping
We believe the measure of a person is deeply rooted in their values, and
the measure of an organization, deeply rooted in its people.
At St. Mary, volunteers have been at the heart of the hospital's healing
mission for nearly half a century.
This indispensable group of caring, dedicated women, men and young people
touch the lives of our patients and the fabric of our organization with
their commitment to Dignity, Excellence, Service, and Justice in the High
Desert communities we serve.
We recently awarded our 2017 junior volunteer scholarships to three fantastic
High Desert high school seniors.

There are many reasons to become a volunteer at St. Mary.
Our volunteers tell us why:
- Feel fulfilled by giving something special back to their community - themselves!
- Enjoy sharing valuable skills and life experiences to help others.
- Compliment and support various departments with their talents.
- The ability to give back to the community through the rapidly changing
health care world.
- Offer empathy, compassion and support to those they encounter.
- Make new friends with similar values and interests.
- Feel appreciated as a valued member of the hospital family.
Many Ways to Be Involved
The opportunities for volunteers at St. Mary are as varied and interesting
as our volunteers themselves.
Here are a
few of the ways our volunteers help:
Front Desk Ambassador: Front desk volunteers are true ambassadors of St. Mary, and very often
represent our guest’s first impression of our ministry. You will
have the opportunity to meet new people, gain incredible customer service
experience, escort family members to their destination, deliver flowers
and make a significant difference in people’s lives by providing
them a comforting welcome in an otherwise stressful time.
Gift Shop: Our gift shop is run top to bottom by our dedicated volunteers from shipping
and receiving, stocking, ordering, displaying and cashiering. Be a part
of a team that maintains a pleasant relationship with the customers and
help run an efficient and smooth operation while ensuring a good relationship
with our guests; provide service in finding merchandise for customers;
and the handling of sales.
Care Ambassador: Care ambassadors visit patients and offer a warm welcome; provide necessary
hospital toiletries, magazines, help with ordering meals; offer information
to patients regarding various hospital services. They have the opportunity
to work collaboratively with unit RNs, Supervisors and Team Leaders to
identify opportunities to improve the patient experience.
Shuttle Driver: The shuttle drivers provide transportation for patients, visitors, and
associates to and from the parking lots and hospital. Customer service
is of utmost value and drivers work directly with the Department of Public Safety.
Requires DMV print out of driving record, copy of valid California driver’s
license and proof of insurance.
Clerical Support: For volunteers who have specific clerical talents such as typing, power
point presentations, data inputting, pie charts, etc., the volunteer services
department can utilize your services. You would volunteer directly with
the Director of Volunteer Services.
