Helpful, healthy advice: Medical experts assist grocery shoppers

APPLE VALLEY — One medical group is planting doctors inside some local grocery stores to help shoppers make healthier food choices and to monitor their health.

In an effort to tackle obesity, cardiovascular disease and other health-related issues, Providence St. Joseph Health’s Southern California Region’s “Shop with Your Doc” project arrived in the High Desert Monday.

Doctor Riad Z. Abdelkarim, the VP and CMO of St. Joseph Health, St. Mary of Apple Valley and Registered Dietitian Debbie Rathbone were at Food-4-Less on Bear Valley Road in Apple Valley to visit with shoppers.

“During their visit, the medical duo toured the store and answered shoppers’ health and nutrition questions,” said St. Joseph Health, St. Mary spokesman Randy Bevilacqua. “They also went over food labels, discussed healthy eating options and lifestyles, and offered blood pressure checks.”
