Robotic Surgery in the High Desert
St. Mary Medical Center is providing a new level in health technology as it offers the first robotic surgery in the High Desert. The Medical Center is now home to a da Vinci Surgery System that is capable of performing various minimally invasive robotic surgeries.

Using the da Vinci robot, the St. Mary surgeon operates while seated at a console viewing a 3D image of the surgical field. The surgeon's fingers grasp the master controls below the display and the system seamlessly translates the surgeon's hand, wrist and finer movements into precise, real-time movements of surgical instruments inside the patient.
A number of procedures performed today using traditional laparoscopic techniques can now be performed more quickly and easily with the da Vinci Surgical System. The advanced features and wrist mobility of the robotic arms and instruments enable surgeons to perform more procedures through one to two centimeter incisions. Robotic surgery allows for greater precision during the operation than the human hand can allow.
For most patients, robotic surgery offers numerous potential benefits over traditional surgery including:

- Less blood loss and fewer transfusions
- Faster recovery
- Quicker return to normal activities
