Women and Infant Services

Women and Infant Services

At St. Mary Medical Center, we know that the birth of a baby is one of life's most precious miracles. To ensure the highest care for moms and babies, St. Mary has board certified obstetricians available in the Labor and Delivery unit 24/7 as well as the only California Children Services (CCS) designated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in the High Desert. Our team of specially trained nurses and health care staff work collaboratively to coordinate the safest care for every mother and newborn. Our specialty team understands the importance of offering personalized care, which is why our staff strives to accommodate the needs of the patients. With a rate of 23%, St. Mary Medical Center has one of the lowest cesarean rates among Southern California hospitals. We understand that giving birth involves many decisions and every expectant mother wants to have the best care for herself and her baby. The obstetrics team members at St. Mary’s are committed to quality care, providing you with everything you need to prepare for this important time in your life and we look forward to being of service to you and your family upon arrival.

Baby Friendly

In 2007, St. Mary Medical Center became one of the first few hospitals (17th) in the country to achieve Baby Friendly Designation with Baby Friendly USA®. The Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI) is a global initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). As part of this initiative, St. Mary is encouraging clinicians in the High Desert to support policies and practices that foster breastfeeding as the exclusive feeding choice for infants in their first six months of life. A new mother is educated, supported and provided with resources to ensure her success with breastfeeding should she choose to breastfeed her baby.

Labor and Delivery

Our goal in Labor and Delivery (L&D) is to provide family centered personal care to you and your support person/s during one of the most memorable experiences in life. Bringing a new life into this world is a sacred moment, and we are privileged to assist you with that special occasion. We have an Obstetrician and Anesthesiologist in the Labor and Delivery department 24 hours a day to ensure you and your baby receive the highest level of care. We practice and encourage an uninterrupted “golden hour” with your baby following birth. Your baby will be placed on your bare chest for “skin-to-skin” contact and bonding. Holding your baby after birth has many physical and emotional benefits for both of you and is an experience you will cherish forever. Mother Baby Unit

Our Mother Baby Unit (MBU) offers comprehensive education for parents and family members. Our education program covers topics such as infant security, breastfeeding, health of the newborn and mother, bed rest and sleep practices as well as nutrition. The Mother Baby Unit offers individualized breastfeeding assistance during your stay and lactation support after discharge. The experienced mother baby staff look forward to assisting you and your family with comfort and guidance during your first few days after the delivery of your newborn. Our goal is to keep you and your newborn together as much as possible after birth. Your baby will remain in the room with you where our nursing team will provide care to both of you. Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

St. Mary Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides critical care to the smallest patients. Our NICU is equipped to care for infants with health complications including being born prematurely. Our NICU is a level III unit which means it meets the rigorous standards set by the state of California. Babies in the NICU are cared for by a multidisciplinary team of specialty-trained nurses, respiratory therapists, dieticians, social workers and case managers. Additionally, St. Mary's NICU is staffed by neonatologists from Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC). CHOC ranked among the nation’s best children’s hospitals by US News & World Report in 2015 and was the first children’s hospital in the United States to earn the Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence. Should your newborn infant require extra care, we look forward to serving you and your family during this time of need. Having a premature or sick baby is difficult. Our NICU staff recognizes that you — the parents – are the most important part of your baby’s care team. Learn more about our NICU and services.

Healthy Beginnings/New Avenues

Helping others feel worthwhile is the inspiration that elevates the Healthy Beginnings/New Avenues program. A primary goal of St. Mary Medical Center's Healthy Beginnings/New Avenues program is to ensure women receive prenatal care during the first trimester of pregnancy. The program's staff members take extra steps to encourage women in the program by elevating self-esteem and empowering them with knowledge of self-care, childbirth education and community resources. Staffed by certified nurse midwives, health workers and social service counselors, Healthy Beginnings/New Avenues provides a holistic approach toward pregnancy.
